The classroom is only the beginning for Loyola students, but hands-on experience in a learning laboratory is what advances their future. Inigo Communications provides students with the ability to put skills learned in the classroom into action through real client work.Inigo fosters a productive learning environment where students gain confidence and take creative risks. Nick Szewc, the vice president of the creative design team, is an example of the growth Inigo can provide its students, preparing him personally and professionallyfor a career after graduation.Â
About Nick SzewcÂ
Nick is a senior studying advertising and public relations at Loyola University Chicago’s School of Communication, with minors in photography and entrepreneurship. During his three semesters in Inigo, he has had multiple roles: creative design coordinator, creative design director and now the vice president of the creative design team. His favorite memory from Inigo was his trip to Washington, D.C. with United Airlines during his first semester, where students captured photo and video content for United’s safety division. Â
Lessons from InigoÂ
During Nick’s time in Inigo, clients have expressed to him how much they enjoy working with a student-run agency. Flaco’s Tacos, a longtime client, appreciates the fresh ideas students bring to the table. For Nick, the ability to collaborate with real clients has greatlystrengthened his communication skills. Inigo has fostered his professional development by offering agency visits, hosting professional development workshops and building his resume. He has also learned how to utilize industry-standard software like Adobe and Microsoft Teams. Â
Advice for Incoming MembersÂ
Nick’s biggest piece of advice for incoming Inigo students is to stay calm and trust yourself. As a new member of Inigo, it can be intimidating to join a group of driven, confident individuals. However, Inigo is composed of people who are willing to support and uplift everyone. Nick also expressed how important it is to network with fellow members and industry professionals. Through networking, students can absorb experiences from other members and learn key industry insights. Â
Path to Professional Success Â
Nick is currently working as a content creation and social media intern for Carol Fox and Associates, a Chicago-based advertising, public relations and marketing agency. Inigo Communications has given him the tools to grow professionally and land this job opportunity. With plans to graduate this May, Nick is grateful for all of the real-world opportunities Inigo has provided. Â
